A study to test whether adding raltegravir to standard therapy reduces the amount of HIV in the blood (ACTG 5244)

This study is designed to find out if adding raltegravir reduces the amount of HIV in the blood using a test that measures very low amounts of the virus.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Men and women with documented HIV infection
  • A viral load of more than 100,000 prior to starting HIV medicines
  • On HIV medicines for more than 12 months
  • No change in HIV medicines for 3 months
  • HIV viral load less than 50 for at least 6 months on HIV medicines
  • CD4 count above 200

Exclusion criteria:

  • Currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Unsuccessful control of HIV on a previous drug combination
  • Unstable medical condition such as heart disease or cancer requiring ongoing therapy
  • An opportunistic infection or other serious illness within 60 days prior to entry
  • Plans to change your current HIV medicines within 24 weeks after study entry
